WPCentral Question

I want to know whether it is possible to install Apache Tomcat on a Windows 8 based phone.

Background to the issue is I need to install a Web Application onto a mobile device so that it can work in off line mode, i.e. I need it to be fully functional regardless of whether internet access is available.

This system is already working on a MS Surface Pro running Windows 8.1 but I now need to operate this of a device like a Nokia Lumia 1520.

I guess my main concerns are:
a) is it possible to install any Windows application on a Windows Phone
b) are there any restrictions to the above, i.e. does the instruction set of the processor prevent such an action without re compiling the application for the specific processor
c) is there anything else that I'm missing due to my own ignorance in this field (Windows Phone)
d) is the OS on a Windows 8 phone a full or cut down version of Windows 8 i.e. as compared to Surface Pro

As can be seen from the above I'm a newbie to Windows phones arena so please feel free to divert to related information that would help. I have already done some research and searching but as it's a new field I don't yet have the knowledge to tailor my search criteria.

Thanks in advance

Simply put: no, impossible. Windows Phone as OS and Windows are two very different things. Even though Microsoft is unifying their ecosystems more and more, it's highly unlikely, that a Windows Phone based device will ever be able to run desktop applications. ;)

Hey welcome to wpcentral.
No you are confused with a desktop OS and a mobile OS. Windows 8/8.1RT is designed to run on arm based chipsets. Though they have windows 8 but that's limited to Microsoft office and apps installed form windows store. User can not install photoshop on RT tablets. Now when we talk about windows phone 8/8.1. They are designed for small screen devices (which also includes phablet , lumia 1520.). They do have Microsoft office mobile , internet explorer mobile and some coo on apps from windows store (RT store ) in windows phone store. But you can not run desktop apps on a phone because the processor isn't powerful enough. And if somehow manage to run , battery life would be terrible. This could be possible in future.
