Is it true that Here is dropping out of Windows phone 10 and 8.1 ?

Windows Central Question

I read that Here will stop servicing Windows10 mobile and windows 8.1 by the end of march 2016, meaning they will drop out of the windows store for win mobile10 and also for windows phone 8.1

Whyyyyyy?!!! thats almost the only reason I keep my windows phones!! I love the Here Drive app!!!!
Msft seems to not care about the slow dismantling of their own mobile hardware experience.
Sure!! they have some apps in other O.Ss, but thats not the point!! Only 2 real feasible options in the mobile industry? Really? duo-polis like those from the 80s, cocacola-pepsi, colgate-crest? Democrats-republicans?
I hate that!!! I love options!!! I DEMAND options!!!
Sorry for my tantrum, its just that im really dissapointed.

If its true about Here, I sadly will need to start looking to other mobile experiences.
THANK YOU NADELLA!!!

FWIW, Maps on W10M has turn by turn with voice and draws from the HERE database for its mapping.

I've only seen two things lacking. You cannot download voicepacks to get a nav voice distinct from system voice and you cannot import HERE Collections to Maps Favorites.

Our Blog has you covered with alternatives as well: Check out these great alternatives to HERE Maps for Windows 10 Mobile | Windows Central

My belief is that by folding HERE data into native Maps it gives Microsoft a powerful native tool for lookup and navigation that integrates deeply into other parts of the OS in W10/W10M like Bing search and Cortana. It makes a more seamless UWP tool.

I also believe that HERE's new owners don't want to maintain the Apps and would rather just lease the data. Passive income.

Hopefully, moving forward, the Maps team will expand the flexibility to incorporate Transit and may even bring back the HERE City Lens type functions for Bing Vision. Hopefully.

As far as my own experience goes, the best alternative to Here maps is Windows Maps, as it uses the same map data and seems to have basically the same functionality (even some features Transit had) in a Windows 10 wrapper. I've tried others but they all seem to be 'meh' alternatives.

Ultimately I'd love to see Google Maps ported over, but honestly there's about 1% chance of this happening.

Have you ever tried out the Sygic Navigation app, its not free but is one of the most reliable full featured and a much better alternate than Windows Map which doesn't even come close to Here Drive that was always a great navigation app we are all going to miss come June.

The nails in the Windows Phone coffin are hitting hard and fast for me. I saw the no more for Windows 10 notice today and damn near tossed my Icon I was so pissed off. I tried Windows Maps today and it's not even in the same league as Here Drive+.

I'm with you on that, I have also purchase copilot with all the extra's it's a good app but most always freeze's up. Back in October I switched over to Sygic GPS with all the extra's not cheap but it's great never had a problem and the heads up display for night driving is the icing on the cake, the one thing that made Here Drive great was lane assist with giving you plenty of notice in advance of approaching turns that still NO other has yet beat.

I made the jump and installed WP10 mobile two days ago. Yesterday I used MS Maps and to be honest it worked darn well. The GUI on Here Drive+ is easier to navigate, but I'm new to MS Maps so I need more time with it. It did just as good as Here Drive+ with the lane assist and gave me plenty of notice before having to make a turn. I'll hammer it some more and keep you all updated. And I'm loving WP10 on the Icon!!!

Dear Microsoft,

I see on the website of HERE Maps there are acceptable (~2yrs old) SatNav images and quite recent, up-to-date street layouts.

On my phone, with Windows 10 Maps and latest maps downloaded, with supposedly HERE data, I see ~8 years old SatNav images and few years old street data.

WHY?

Do we now only get outdated junk from HERE? (Well, at least it's "free"... nobody needs it any more.)

Lifetime navigation was one of the primary reasons I chose and promoted Windows devices (also for company use).

Will this be fixed (either with more recent HERE data or from a different supplier) or the useful Lifetime navigation will be abandoned?

Thanks
Janos

I sure the Microsoft Maps will be decent enough - one nice thing I noticed is the added traffic cam icons which open quickly.
But the one thing I depend on and will miss very VERY much is the My Commute live tile which in a glance I can determine which route to take to work on a given morning.(Actually I am already missing it as after the most recent update, the Here Drive app crashes)

Does anyone know of a alternative for My Commute?

Re: is it true that Here is dropping out of windows phone 10 and 8.1 ?

I've only seen two things lacking. You cannot download voicepacks to get a nav voice distinct from system voice.

It's not just voices, but also languages.

My OS is set to English. That's my preferred language, and also simply necessary due to my work.

However, when navigating through Germany, France, Spain or Italy, I want my voice guidance set to that country's native language so the pronunciation of street names doesn't completely suck. Like most Europeans, I'm fluent in more than one language, so I'd prefer voice navigation to pronounce things correctly, rather than constantly having me guess at what WM's English voice might be saying.

That would be tolerable, as I don't travel to those countries every day, but I happen to live in a country that officially speaks four different languages. All four of those language regions are within 120 km (75 miles) of my home. I travel to most of those regions frequently, and I'm fluent in three of those four languages.

Using HERE maps I could easily switch languages depending on where I was. I can't do that using MS maps, which is comparable to losing the voice navigation feature.

This is just another instance of MS showing their ignorance of the world outside the U.S.

For me MS maps is a huge step back, despite them continuing to use the same map data. Navigation was the last main thing keeping me on WM. This is the straw that broke the camel's back. It's why my daily driver is no longer a WM device.
