A week back when visited Nokia Care center, I was confused after learning from Support people that on the air update is not reliable and only when updated by connecting mobile to PC is proper procedure to update.

I'm from India and have my Nokia Lumia 720. There is a problem with my volume button and visited to get it rectified only when I was told as above after checking my handset for presence of latest update and also asked for my confirmation to update my mobile with latest software/firmware which I didn't agree for at that time as I didn't have any backup of my data on the phone like photos, songs, contacts etc..

Can any one (if any one from MS or Nokia if seeing this post) please let me know what is the difference between OTA update and updating while connected to a PC and which procedure among these is proper one.

Many thanks in advance....:

The difference I know between ota and service center update is data migration. Ota migrates your apps as well as your phone settings, etc is retained even after the system is updated. Service center update will wipe out your data and you'll need to start all over again. Usually, fresh system is always preferred in case of os upgrades IMO. Not sure if one is better doing than the other.

The only difference is that if phone is updated OTA, all the data and settings are retained. Whereas in flashing the phone connected to a PC, one loses all data. So a clean start. Either way both are proper. Use ota if you don't want to lose data. Else connect to a PC and flash your device.
