Is there any alternative to the built-in satnav/gps?

I've been getting frustrated with the sat nav on my lumia, it sends me on some bizarre routes, comparing side-by-side with an android phone or garmin gps, sometimes the route decided by lumia is around 20% longer and not the route I would choose looking at map.
