The width of the Lumia 925 is 2.78''. Lumia 920: 2.79''
The width of the Lumia 1520 is 3.36''. Lumia 1320: 3.38''

Let's take the Lumia 925 and the Lumia 1520 for comparison:

Lumia 925
2.78'' for 2 columns of live tiles => 1.39'' column width.

Lumia 1520
3.36'' for 3 columns of live tiles => 1.12'' column width.

So, the columns of live tiles in the L1520 is 20% smaller. Although, this is a simplification because we have to take into account bezels and borders, but those make even bigger the difference in favor of the L925.

What do you think about this, It's a good thing that tiles are smaller or could cause usability problems?

The Nokia Lumia 800 or the Samsung Omnia W both have 3.7 inch screens if I remember correctly. And with Windows Phone 7 the tiles were even smaller. The Lumia 620 has a 3.8 inch screen. All of them are fine in terms of usability.

I don't really feel like calculating the size comparison for the Lumia 620, but I guess it would be interesting to compare it to the 1520.

I would think it's going to depend on the app and what/how much information is on the live tile. ESPN Hub that just has two teams and two numbers, probably not so bad. Amazing Weather with current and future conditions, location and time, plus a picture, that might get to be a little much crammed in there.

Good point, the live tiles in the L620 are 13% smaller than in the 925 and people looks happy with the phone. Although, the tiles in the L1520 are still 7% smaller.

My Verizon Trophy had a 3.8" screen, and one day in a different forum someone told me they'd never be happy with a screen that small, so they were keeping their iPhone (3.5" screen). Yeah..... Anyway, I know the Trophy was one of the smaller WP7 devices, but I'm thinking there was at least one that was smaller, no? 3.7" or 3.5" comes to mind, but I'm not positive. Either way, I seriously doubt that tile size will be a problem on the 1520/1320, considering that the developer can't adjust the font size on the tiles, so he can't make it a small font to fit more info. The text size is what it is.

4" screen, like the size of the 520, happens to be the same as a standard business card. Personally, I'd like a very small and thin WVGA phone of about 2.5" The ppi would be pretty fantastic and it would still be very usable.
