I have a brand new Lumia 640 that I got with Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 and Lumia Denim. I went and got the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant from the Store believing that it would put me on the latest build of Windows 10, 14393. Instead, it stuck me on 10586, and now, when I go to the settings app, 14393 shows up and will download in a normal expectable time, but fails with a error code after going through the "Preparing to Install Updates" step. I have tried different Wi-Fi networks, I have tried soft resets, I have tried plugging it into power, I have tried using the WDRT to force a install (it just wants to revert back to WP8.1), and now I am out of ideas. I am in the middle of a hard reset right now. Any help would be appreciated.

Hard reset seems to be the answer here.

Or you can use WDRT and go back to WP8.1 and then download the Win10 Upgrade Advisor and install Windows 10 14393

Random question: Do you have an SD card in your 640 right now? Those can be weird with updates.

I do not. I remember those being buggy with updates back when Windows 10 Mobile launched, so I always take them out beforehand.

Update: I hooked the 640 up to WDRT and went back with WP8.1 U2. Ran the upgrade again, took me to build 10586. FINALLY, the phone decided to take 14393 and is currently upgrading now. Thanks for the help guys.

I was able to upgrade mine to 15007 when it was available. It's really been a great phone to play with.
