Lumia 640 & Windows 10

I tried out a Lumia 640 with build 10586, but it was rather disappointing. I recently got to try out a Lumia 650 with Windows 10 as well. I wasn't happy, but with the Anniversary Update it's been great!

So what I want to know is if I can expect something similar with the Anniversary Update on Lumia 640 as well. I wanted to hear from those who use, or have used Lumia 640 with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Specifically, I want to know your experience with it in terms of performance and stability, so I would appreciate feedback from those who have actually been using it for a while.

My wife's Lumia 640 XL with the Anniversary Update is working just fine (+ Continuum for phones!).

It's working fine for me, although the font is a bit small, I had to max it out in the settings.

I'm on T-mo, and don't have wi-fi calling.

I didn't update it until AU, so I don't have any idea about how it improved. Is there some specific bit you want to know how it's working?

Overall it's an okay phone, but mine keeps crushing all the apps at some time. There were some changes with the anniversary update, but in my opinion this phone is buggy. I got used to it. Ask if you want to know something in specific.

In my recent experience, there is a speed difference between the 640 on Windows 10 and the 650. That still somewhat applies. I felt like the 640 can get hung up occasionally and with the 650, that doesn't happen as much.

I'm not understanding that. My wife has a T-Mobile 640 and has been on the insider production ring and has WiFi calling now and to the best of my recollection never lost it although I didn't check it after every update.

On my T-Mobile 640 I did insider, update advisor to win 10, then a factory reset. Phone was mostly stable with more than a few bugs. For me the dealbreakers were again Cortana not being nearly as good as 8.1 and something I could not track down. Where in podcasts, Overdrive and other apps that downloaded large(ish) media files it would register as fully downloaded but the second half of the file was blank/would not play.

Considering those things are very important in my daily use I am back to 8.1. I do not recall definitely if WiFi calling worked after the factory reset. I do recall specifically noticing the icon after reverting back to 8.1.

If I'm not mistaken, if you do a straight upgrade from 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile without hard resetting, you can keep it and trick things that way?

I agree about Cortana. Having half of a media file not load is annoying, and I get why you did.

I upgraded my T-Mobile Lumia 640 to WP10 back in October and it's definitely been a mixed bag. I do like the new functionality and app availability and the fact that notifications pop up on my Windows 10 PC now as well (such as when I miss a call). That having been said, stability is definitely worse with more frequent reboots required to resolve stability issues. I've had some phone hangs requiring a soft reset to resolve. And my T-Mobile LTE settings weren't set properly after the upgrade which broke MMS functionality - I had to research and add the appropriate settings manually + use the T-Mobile app to resolve. I'd also say battery live is about 20% worse, although I still make it through the day without any issues. Oh, and Bluetooth functionality is definitely buggier to boot.

If you don't need to use any WP10 specific apps and aren't fussed on any W10 specific functionality, I'd advise staying put on WP8.1.

Seems pretty good for my mom, granted she doesn't use it for much except the occasional call, whatsapp, camera, email...

I was pretty happy with it whenever I had to help her do something on it.

Thanks again for all your feedback. I think I'll go ahead with the upgrade if and when the app situation with WP 8 worsens (relatively), or maybe after the Creators Update. I just hope Microsoft doesn't suddenly decide to stop upgrades for phones currently compatible with Windows 10 Mobile.

You are using Continuum on a 640 xl???? HOW?

I assumed they meant Miracast or something.

Hard reset doesn't kill it. When WiFi wasn't working on my wife's 640, I did a hard reset (which didn't help BTW - turned out to be a SIM card that decided to go bad, or at least was fixed by replacing the SIM card). I'm wondering if some people might just think they don't have WiFi calling because if I recall right, the 640 doesn't indicate WiFi calling is being used on the phone tile as it did with previous Windows phones such as 925, 521, 635.

The way to check if you have Wi-Fi calling is to set in "Cellular & SIM --> SIM Settings" under Wi-Fi calling to be "Wi-Fi Only". In my case, I can't make a call, which means Wi-Fi calling isn't working.
