Hello,

Frequently, when a notification or a call comes in, my speaker sounds as if it is blown. The noise is very distorted and muffled. However, the speaker is really not blown because I usually get a normal sounding tone/ring/notification.

I am thinking this is a software issue here. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Are you on W10M Technical Preview?
This happens to me occassionally. The alarm sounds like a braying donkey at times.

I hear the same noise sometimes & I did not upgrade to WP 10 Preview. It freaked me out thinking the speaker was blown & I've only had the phone for 2 months.

Hello,

I have not upgraded to the Win10 Mobile Preview. I am thinking of resetting my phone to factory settings. I am also thinking of just upgrading to Win10 Mobile Preview. Anyway of doing this without being signed up as a Windows Insider?

no. you need to install the windows insider app and sign up for slow or fast ring. Otherwise there is no way your phone will find the OS.
I highly recommend reading other threads here with people's experience on W10M with their L640XL though before you make the jump.
E.g. I am ok with some sluggish OS response in the latest build. My band does not work the same way as on 8.1 Update 2 etc.

either way, it is highly recommended to do a hard reset after updating. Unless you know you save a lot of time by doing a hard reset in 8.1 and then update and then do another hard reset on W10M you might as well do an update first and then a hard reset.

Derausgewanderte,

Read my mind. Already have been reading several threads while updating to the current fast track preview build.

Now lets see if this resolves the speaker bug ;-].

It might be the back cover vibrating at certain frequencies. Try listening to the same source with the back cover removed. Please report back so others know if this was the source.
