Messaging Hub 8.1 Integration

There have been several people that have said that the new wp 8.1 allows any app to connect into the messaging hub due to new api's or something. Is there any truth to this or is the messaging "hub" no longer going to be anything more than an SMS app?

in earlier build of wp8.1 there was an option to set default messaging app , but in the preview build they removed this feature.

I may be wrong but was it not mentioned in one of the posts that this feature will not make it to 8.1 GA?

The OS is feature locked. Nothing new will be added or removed from what we see in the preview. Only bugs will be fixed (hopefully!)

What if it is not opened because APPS are not ready for it?

That would delay the launch by months!
