Microsoft and the future

First, let me establish my opinion of Microsoft. They are the greatest company in the entire world from my perspective. Bill Gates is my strongest role model and I believe almost everything Microsoft has done has been for the best. Everyone and every company makes the occasional mistake and of course Microsoft has had it?s fair share of mistakes but they recovered from them well. Like I said they have done amazing things and are extremely innovative whether Apple fans would like to agree or not but it?s not what they have done that worries me, it?s the future of the company.

From what I have heard and seen, I trust Satya Nadella and his mobile and cloud perspective seems promising for the future of the company. Although for the past decade, until windows phone and the surface line, Microsoft has not been very innovative at all. We built a strong foundation from the start and still have that with Office, Windows, Xbox, and software. This isn?t enough anymore though and it goes against Bill Gates original mindset of a pc in every home. It seemed insane at the time but he was a visionary and guess what, it happened. We need that mindset again for new products.

Microsoft is finally gaining some good ground with Windows Phone. The new 8.1 update makes us an extremely real competitor in the mobile world now with the modern features and Cortana. Windows 8.1 for desktops, laptops, and tablets fixed some major things. We?re starting the slow uphill trend for that as well. The acquisition of Nokia?s mobile department was a good move and should increase windows phone market share. Microsoft is getting lucky with these things and I?m proud. They deserve it.

I hate thinking like this but let?s look at the facts of the company. We?re losing money on some of our products. Windows phone only has about a 4% market share in the whole world. The Surface 3 is arguably the first Surface that actually should get us somewhere good and not let us lose more money. Now granted, Windows is the dominant animal when it comes to PC market share and it probably will be that way for generations as Apple barely has any. Apple and Google are way bigger companies now though, net worth wise.

But you know what, I?m going to go a different route. I?m not going to compare Microsoft plans and decisions with that of Apple and Google like most people. Unlike most people think, Microsoft should not under any circumstances follow the path given by those two mobile giants. Microsoft is innovative and so is Nokia (now Microsoft Mobile). We have never gone the route of just releasing a newer generation of the same thing over and over again. Sound familiar? Probably because that?s exactly Apple?s business model. People pay for the brand when they buy Apple products. Every generation of the iPhone is way too expensive and about two ?innovative? things are added. Have we gone the route of marketing unpractical features and devices, most of which are absolute crap? No but that?s Google for you. These tech giants get away with these cheap business models but never innovate anymore. Microsoft always has and always will.

So what?s the fix? Well that?s a hard question and one that I will answer honestly and basically. We have to innovate and that sounds cliche but it?s not. Satya is right in his view of cloud and mobile as the future. We need to find the passion that Bill Gates had for the PC and we need to apply that to the Surface and Windows Phone. Windows Phone is an amazing operating system and although the 8.1 update gets us going even further, we already need to start on a new update the doesn?t keep us on par with the competition but puts us ahead and far ahead. We also need to focus on keeping the care we put into our products. Microsoft is famous for quality and we have to keep it that way because when these business models of Apple and Google fail, ours will prevail and Microsoft will be there with innovation. We have to reimagine the company in a way that will show the world we are not old and boring but fun and new.

These are not all my thoughts but I leave with this: Microsoft was the past, is the present, and will be the future.

I really like your views. I have to agree you stand corrected. Microsoft has always innovated.

But in recent times yes they made mistakes. Though WP 8.1 was a huge improvement over its predecessor, it still lacks various features. I'm not gonna start naming that again as we can find them on forums and uservoice.

If i ever get chance to give presentation in Microsoft, I'd make them realize how they are self destructing by scattering their activities.
Lets take an example of Windows Phone. Microsoft did everything possible to bring other developers to the platform. Instagram (Which hasn't been updated since the release i guess), Facebook (I can't say anything negative about FB messenger, it works great) and yeah Whats App (ignore the brief period of disappearance which really affected goodwill of WP) but they aren't paying much attention to their own apps. *cough*Skype*cough* Can you imagine? A company which says that WP is best for Business can't even make a decent app for it. I believe Skype is widely used in Business world. Why would anyone consider buying it when it doesn't even have proper features?

I wish microsoft gets it's priorities straight and makes a team which is motivated to make its products better. I wish Bill was still there to support. I can expect transformation under Satya but he has to take steps to rectify the losses before proceeding further.

As both an Android and Windows Phone user I wish the Microsoft company well and hope that it will be guided towards greater success by those running it. It is regrettable that some people, even users, express dissatisfaction with the Windows Phone OS for one reason or another and decide it's not for them. The effect of that will be to make it harder for Microsoft to establish WP on the same footing as Android and Apple. My own view is that we owe it to Microsoft to give all the support we can, not just because it's a good OS, but because many people's livelihoods are involved here. How, in the modern world, could you do anything but wish success, and continued success, to any enterprise? Of course it needs to have a good act.
But here's one annoying thing: the decision - was it Stephen's? - to subsume the Nokia name into Microsoft Mobile or something of the sort. The message that sends to me is, "We're Microsoft and we're big and important and it's about us. Forget Nokia." I don't like that message.

android was bad at power management and power usage, it drains out battery very quick. while in windows phone, it doesn't it has a good power management (on Windows Phone 8 and some Windows Phone 8.1), it doesn't drain much battery even on screen for a long time. Microsoft win.

some android app required to have high power, high spec and lots of RAM to run, while Windows Phone doesn't, 512MB of RAM can run over 99% of app. Microsoft win.

apple has been jailbreak, allow to install free games and some unpublished game, and sometimes it has very limited function, bluetooth can't pair to other device for transferring data, no NFC, sometimes Wi-Fi connection are bull****, odd menu, no app list, so they are allowed not to put unwanted app on menu. while Windows Phone has lots of function, and live tile, deliver you the notification at a glance, and was cheaper than apple. Microsoft win.

why Microsoft doesn't gain much user? they are afraid to be different, see Nokia X, using android + Windows Phone UI, Microsoft wanted to be part of most people, but sometime it is a wrong decision, they wont change Windows, while in Windows Phone, they wanted to gain more user, but choosing the wrong way to.

currently it is still a long time for Microsoft, they wanted to get more market share in a blink like how apple and android. another reason for Microsoft cant gain more user is late development and people think it is a no. Microsoft release windows phone 7 at 2010, when apple ruled the most of the market share, 2011 till now, android ruled the most of the market share, it is hard to climb up when you have least manufacturer support and releasing new phone. currently, lots of manufacturer started to use windows phone, even sony is planing it, and samsung planned to not using android anymore, using its own OS.

but now, Microsoft release nokia X2, if it is other OS that allow to use android app, then android might drop, but it is android-forked OS, it will help android climbing back (unless it counted in other way). furthermore, people can root it and use google play, which make it a original android. it is a very bad choice for Microsoft using forked android
