Microsoft steps back from OpenAI board, will no longer hold observer seat

After eight months of holding a non-voting observer seat on the OpenAI board, Microsoft has given up that seat. Microsoft continues to own 49% of the for-profit portion of OpenAI.

A bit early but expected.
The buildup of inhouse LLM tech must be going better than expected if they're increasing the distance between the two boards.
At some point (in the next year?) MS will be ready to ditch GPS as their primary LLM although they'll obviously keep it in their coding toolkit, especially on the Azure side. But MS has traditionally prefers to be masters of their destiny and being dependent on OpenAI was never going to be more than a jumpstart to their final, proprietary toolkit.
