Not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but I've found that you can launch multiple instances of the messenger application in WP8.
To reproduce :
Launch another instance, and chose a thread you already have opened.
You will now have three instances. (and you can keep going ...)
To double check whether they were unique instances, I started typing a message in one instance, then switched to another instance of the same thread, and the partial message was there, meaning that were the same instance.
I'm on GDR3 (developer preview), but recall observing this on GDR2 (not sure if this is a Nokia issue, or a WP8 issue).
