new to phone 8, some questions

Hi,
I got my lumia 920 today and so far I am loving it! I am new to windows phone (although I had 2 windows mobile phones and 2 windows CE/pocket pc PDAs).

Firstly, is there a "my apps" button hidden somewhere in the Store, where I can see whether there are updates for the installed apps? I noticed that many Nokia apps preinstalled on the lumia had updates, but I had to manually search the app to update them, I couldn't find any aggregated "app update center" (like on a blackberry or simply windows update on any pc)

Secondly, (I live in europe), is there a way to get the same service from Bing as people from the US get, like the weather which you can ask through speech recognition, ... ?

Hello and congrats on your new windows phone 8! Now for your first question about knowing when an app needs an updates, the windows store app will have a number on it, 1,2 whatever, that is when you know that you have an app update. You open your store app and update the app.

Now about the bing weather I have no clue :/

to clarify what baryex86 said ( no offense Baryex86 but your answer somewhat confused me and ive used wp since the beginning lol ) like he said your store tile will notify you if an app has an update, when you click it it takes you to the store, at the bottom of the screen it will show how many apps have updates, click that and it opens up the update page with all the apps that have updates, you can click any individual app to update or click all so you do have the freedom to refuse to update an app if you so choose, you might refuse to update an app if there is a known issue with the update, doesn't happen often but it has happened where an update screws up an app, thats why you should visit wpcentral daily, there pretty good about informing you about update issues ( i know, a shameless plug foe wpcentral )

I am in the UK. I held down the Windows button and asked "What's the weather like?" And it just did a bing search for that wording. It didn't show me the weather. Is that what you needed to know?

Just to get a little more in-depth with the app updates situation: as others have said, your store live tile will update and show the number of updates available. When you tap on the store tile, you'll see "x updates" near the bottom-left of the first pane. You then tap that to see (and start) your updates, again as others have said, either individually or all at once. However, sometimes, the store seems to 'forget' to let you know there are updates available, meaning this prompt won't show up. If you know there is an update for a specific app, but your store tile isn't notifying you of it, you can search for that app on the store, and where it originally said 'download', it will instead say 'update'. You can tap that to start the update.

There is a bug with the update notification on tile and in store app. Its weird, some people haven't had any issues from day one, some have never received them and some, like me, stopped getting them about two months ago and then magically started getting them couple of weeks ago. I believe there is an ongoing thread here of daily updates for that reason. If you aren't getting them, give it some time. One day, they may appear. Also, be patient. Not all regions get the updates on same day.

As for Bing, it seems different "regions" are getting different services. If you're in US, you get all the latest, greatest first. I bet EU will get the features sooner or later. Just a guess and if their is a work around, I don't know short of getting an MS account setup in US and resetting your phone to that account. Purely speculation, but I would bet the features will roll out within the year. Good luck with your 920.

I changed my regional settings to United States and all the Bing features magically work!

Whatsapp: how can I actually select the right whatsapp emoticon, the windows emoticons show up, but the whatsapp emoticons are sent, sometimes the moods don't match at all

Facebook: I don't want the facebook themed lockscreen, but I still want the notifications. Although I switched everything on, new messages or some other notifications don't show up as a "notification" in the live tile or on the bottom of the lockscreen (where I accept facebook notifications). So far only photo tags on facebook showed up.

But except for these small beginner problems I really love the platform, much more than I loved windows CE or windows mobile about 10 years ago haha The ms office integration is perfect and there are so many useful apps (like buying train tickets from your phone here in Switzerland!)

I don't use whatsapp so no clue there. As for fb, I got 920 at launch and have tried everything under the sun. I have yet to receive a tile notification or lock screen notification. I've heard different things have worked for different people. I gave up a long time ago but search the wp8 forums. There were a lot of "try this" threads and some worked for people.
