no updates or e-mail since new 8.1

WPCentral Question

i have been unable to update any files or connect to log in to g.mail since installing 8.1. i have internet connection but only facebook etc. is responding. I have installed a new google app to get e.mails but this isnt helping updates. will I have to re-boot?
