Nokia Brand dead. Big Mistake?

Just reading on The Verge, the Nokia brand is as good as dead, no more phones with the Nokia branding (other than feature phones).

Really don't understand the thinking on this. Nokia is still an established name in smartphones. I think "Nokia", I think quality hardware, devices with heritage. Whilst we all know it will still be Nokia behind the hardware - the average Joe won't know this?

I understand Microsoft is now a devices & services company, but surely at least some mention of the Nokia construction would be a plus?! Or a transition period for the branding "Microsoft Phone" constructed by Nokia?

Hope I'm wrong, but seems at this stage to be a mistake.

I think Microsoft will be mad to remove the Nokia branding. If Microsoft tries to build up a Microsoft Lumia brand name, it's the same as starting from scratch, and they won't survive.

Not according to the Verge article. Only feature phones will be branded as Nokia. The Nokia mark will remain in Finland, Lumia I presume will just be "Lumia", or "Microsoft Lumia".

" the "Asha" and "Lumia" trademarks will transfer to Redmond, but the "Nokia" mark will remain property of the Finnish company, and may only be used on featurephones under a 10-year license agreement. That means any future Windows Phones built by the newest division of Microsoft will be Microsoft-branded ? and that Nokia has said its goodbyes to a smartphone market it once helped to create."

The verge is biased against Microsoft and anything that doesn't run Android, so I would take what they say with a pinch of salt. Anything to make it look like big bad Microsoft will fail and is making the wrong decision and is a behemoth swallowing up poor old Nokia.

The Verge says that got the info from Microsoft slides. That article does say the Lumia transfers to Redmond, so at least they can use that name which right now pretty much is Windows Phone.

According to Finnish newspapers, Verge is right. No more Nokia smartphones. Microsoft can use "Nokia" brand only in feature phones.
