"After the announcement of the partnership between Nokia and Microsoft this morning workers voiced their concern with the deal by walking out of Nokia facilities. It is believed that as many as a thousand workers marched out today (or took the day off using flex time) so that the company would know that they don?t believe the partnership is in their best interest, even after CEO? Stephen Elop?s startlingly frank ?burning platform? memo earlier this week."

I read somewhere that the building that they walked out of had 3,000 workers and they all worked on the symbian project, so its only people that know there jobs are going to be gone ..
I hope the rest of Nokia is on board, the drawings of the new Nokia WP7 are georgus...

Maybe it was the article I linked to? ;)

"Many of the protestors work on the Symbian software so their jobs will be in jeopardy as Nokia begins to implement Windows Phone 7 on its handsets. Their future is not at all clear after today?s news?broad strokes have been painted but much of the logistics have yet to be revealed. Nokia will not work exclusively with the Windows Phone 7 operating system (and they will be customizing it) so jobs will be preserved but Symbian will no longer play the prominent role it once did at the company so job loss is inevitable."

It's sad but if you can't compete you shouldn't be allowed to play the game. I hope all of those that will lose their jobs land on their feet and find themselves innovating once again but right now it's time for change.

Symbian is done as a mid-end (even high-end) smart phone OS, but for a dumb phone or low-end smart phone OS, I think they will still be around. Nokia and Symbian are still very popular in other parts of the globe, especially third world countries where it's very expensive to own an iPhone, Android phone, or WP7.

According to Wikipedia..Nokia has 132,000 employees.

Apple has about 46,000 employees.

1. Which company do you think makes more money?

2. Which company do you think has alot of wasteful redundancies?

Answer.

Nokia's gonna shed some fat.

Aren't many of those in manufacturing though? Something which Apple outsources entirely?
