In another thread I mentioned that my first Surface Book had random hard-freezes. It turned out to be a HW issue best as I could figure, and I appeared to have gotten a lemon. My local Microsoft Store was initially going to have me go through the warranty exchange process - which bummed me out, because I had planned on being out of town next week and wanted my Surface Book to accompany me and they said it would take 3-5 business days to get a replacement.

Well I must have truly looked pathetic, because they took pity on me. They managed to go out back and give me a unit that was from someone who pre-ordered but didn't come pick up the unit. They have 48 hours to pick up a machine, and it had been 4 days, so they decided to give me his unit! I am so grateful.

So far, I've been running the same software that I did on the first box, without any lockups! This unit also started off correctly with the Windows/Device Setup procedure instead of to the lock screen with a default user (that unit was so bizarre).

With all the negative comments floating around, I thought I'd just mention that I love this computer so far. You can see how it gets very close to the Surface dream of having "more than a laptop". There are some moments with this computer that truly are impressive.

Love the Surface Book. Looking forward to what Microsoft does with a couple more generations of this device.

that is awesome! I have had a similar experience, except for battery life. I am seeing about 5 hours per the powercfg report. What are you getting on average?

I've still been installing all sorts of stuff on the Surface Book, so I don't know if I have a good handle on battery life so far. All I know is that it has to be better than my Lenovo W541, which is always running hot with that Quad Core i7 :). I also have installed some software that required heavy indexing of its content, so my machine has been working constantly.

I am hoping for 8 hours of battery life, which would be far better than my Surface Pro 3 and my Lenovo!

I'll update this thread with my impressions of battery life after I have a full day of (normal) use.

Fortunately, unlike my first SB - this one hasn't locked up once. It does have all of the other issues with Edge however (color shifting, flickering).

Now that I have the Surface Book, I can't imagine going back to the Surface Pro or any other notebook for that matter. The hardware is absolutely gorgeous but the killer is the flexibility. I have a HUGE tablet for when I take engineering notes and draw diagrams or happy little trees. And the rest of the time I have this fantastic notebook with a discrete GPU.

I appreciate you posting something positive. It's easy for forums to overflow with negativity.
