OneNote not free for Windows 10?

Bit surprised to discover after upgrading to Windows 10 that the tablet edition of OneNote now requires an Office 365 subscription. (The older desktop edition still appears to be free, however).

IMHO this is a bit cheeky as those of us who used OneNote regularly are now forced to take out an Office 365 subscription... wonder if this was always the plan behind "free" Windows 10? "Sorry everyone, Outlook Mail and Calendar are going to need an Office subscription to work. And Calculator. And Maps... etc etc.".

It doesn't require one, it works perfectly fine without it. I suspect it shares a common library with the other Office "touch" apps that do require an Office 365 subscription, and so it says that it needs one if you don't have one. But if you use it, you'll see that it has full functionality.

No, I'm having the same issue. It's telling me a trial version is now over (less than a week after I upgraded to Windows10) and that I have to upgrade to Office365 or close the app. It's still free to use on my Windows phone though. This is highly annoying...

I've installed 10 PCs and 1 tablet, and have not seen anything other than what I described. As long as you're logged in with a valid Microsoft account, OneNote is free.

Think I've cracked it though. The problem I'm having is with the latest version of the OneNote app. That tries to make me buy Office365 (no thanks!). However... OneNote from my already installed Office2010 DOES work fine still.

So it's the new app I suspect?

Well, I have 2 accounts :
a) a personal one (outlook/live)
b) a pro one (office365)

I have to mention I can access both notebooks on my iPhone. BUT :

a) on my Lumia running W10 mobile Insider preview, whilst the personal notebook is OK, the app refuses to open the work one (requires office365 )
b) on PC, it nags about activating the office365 subscription but it seems to work fine (I've just tested it syncs and is not in "reading mode only" as indicated in the About section.

So MS have to clarify this, especially on mobile (but also on PC): why can't we access properly to an office365 account when OneNote on iOS can?
