Overview of Upgrade paths

Hi Dan (and others)

I recently tried to upgrade my wife's 1520 as far as I could because it had gotten stuck on 10.0.15063.2. Eventually I had to use Device Recovery Tool to get it back to 8.1 and then upgrade it all the way through Upgrade Advisor to 10 and Insider to 10.0.15063.674 with several bumps in between. All of that worked without any problems though.

I tried the same on a 1020 that had 10.0.10586.545 on it but didn't upgrade any further. The device recovery tool brought it to 8.10.12393.890, phone update brought it to 8.10.14226.359, but Upgrade Advisor now says "Your phone is not support for the upgrade to Windows 10" and Windows Insider doesn't change that.

Is there any total overview on how far you can update a specific device and on how to get it that far?
Is there any way to get my 1520 to 1709?
Is there any reason why my 1020 could go from 8.1 to 10 in the past but not anymore?

I am trying to reply but keep getting messages about "exceeding the spam threshold (3/3)"

Thanks for the quick reply! The ChangeWindows.org website is very useful, but it doesn't include an overview of devices that can actually get a certain update. So if I would look at https://changewindows.org/rings/mobile it seems that some devices would get stuck on
10586.1176, others on 14393.1770 and yet others can go to 15254.1.
However my 1520 is currently stuck on 15063.674 no matter if I put it on Fast, Slow, Release Preview or not on Insider at all. Did anyone actually get the 1520 on 10.0.15254.1 through the Insider Rings?
And my 1020 got stuck at 10.0.10586.545, again not one of the numbers that I would expect to get stuck on

It also just feels plain wrong that my 1020 used to be able to get Windows 10 and now doesn't even get the opportunity to go to 10 at all (so I can't restore a backup either). This is basically the second time Microsoft has apparently blocked this upgrade path. First they promised the 1020 would get it, then reneged on that, then made it possible through Upgrade Advisor and Insider Preview and now they have blocked it again. Microsoft giveth, Microsoft taketh away.

Where does the above list of devices that can move from 8.1 to 10 come from? It seems based purely on release date and not on capabilities/specs (430 is there, 1020 isn't)

I have also tried with the Over-the-cable-updater tool but for both the 1020 and 1520 it gives a "device is already uptodate". I just found out about that tool and it works great! I just wish it would have a /ring=fast switch.

I have since read a bit more about "hacks" but haven't decided yet if they would be worth it on the 1020 (probably) or on the 1520 (probably not). This seems to be the very best resource on WC: windows-10-mobile-how-guides/452310-how-offline-update-unsupported-lumias-8-1-latest-10586-xxx-14393-xxx-15063-xxx-build
