Picking up an i3 question

Got a Surface 3 but I'm looking to go back to a bigger screen. I previously had the i5 and got rid of it because of the fan so I'm considering the i3 as many people have said its essentially fanless. Have any owners encountered the fan coming on and under what circumstances? Not interested in the SP4 Core M as I prefer Windows 8. Thanks.
