Picture preview icon only works with a few pictures

I have run a fairly major update this morning and now the majority of picture preview thumbnails have disappeared to be replaced by a mountain icon. I have been through stripping the thumbnail cache and ensuring that the view is a thumbnail and not an icon in explorer. This is important as I work a lot with jpegs etc and need to locate them quickly. Please help! regards Jonathan
