Potential of Windows tablets >> Windows Phone

I think the potential of windows tablets is much greater than that of Windows Phone.

• Many people are already using Win 8.1 tablets/laptops, although not many of them pay much attention to the Windows Store
• It makes sense for iOS/Android users to keep using their iPhones/Android phones while consider using Windows tablets. Even if universal apps cannot fully satisfy their needs, they can still use apps on their phones
• The Surface devices have already caught major attention from people, including those who like Macbooks/iPads. More and more people will consider using Windows tablets.

So while Microsoft should not give up on Windows Phone, they should put more resources in the Windows tablets market. I think tablet users have at least some incentives to download apps from Windows Store.

Certainly, I already know that kind of potential that you're talking about. For me, working with a W8.1 tablet has been a great pleasure, using it for college and work. I don't know what kind of resources are you thinking to add, but even though I'm not as pro as an IT user, I need a list of non common programs in order to be productive with my career as a musician. I have an app for sheet music reading and I'm planning to get one called Staff Pad for allow me to write sheet music with an active pen to digitize it.

I don't know the WP situation because i'm still using a 7.8 device but I was reading that it's a little tricky to manage some files in WP8.1 (even with the "Files" app), for example the bluetooth/email sharing of a PDF file, not to mention others less universal files.

I'm pretty sure that their tablets are doing so well because they put more money and advertising into their surface market than their phones. The last commercial I saw for Windows phone was the Lumia 900 beta commercial.

I think it's mostly the device (hardware) that attracts consumers, not the OS.

For example, people don't buy Surface because of Windows 8.1. They like the pen, the kickstand, the detachable keyboard, the Intel Processor, and other hardware specs.

Therefore, if Microsoft wants market share, Windows 10 can help but they also need to attract people with cutting-edge, top of the line phones (in terms of hardware, features and design) that will impress ordinary people.

I agree.. I have 2 pcs with windows 10 and make sure there both up-to-date.. along with a windows phone. I do believe the tablet will serve a better purpose as far as I concerned.
To walk around with a bulky pc is a bit cumbersome. The phone is nice but a bit lacking in size. It is suitable for calls though.. I'm looking forward for a new tablet with windows such as the new Surface 4.

I disagree. The Surface attracts those who want full-blown Windows on a tablet. The Surface is a very expensive device compared to other tablets so I think Windows is the defining feature.

This is expected.

When new hardware devices are announced in Sep & Oct, the adoption rate of Windows 10 will increase again for sure. I believe quite many people had a need to change their PCs but they didn't because of Windows 8. Now they will be more willing to buy new PCs with Windows 10.

Yes, Surface devices are more expensive than other Windows tablets in general.

However, Surface has successfully eliminated people's perception that Windows PC are not worth to spend money on. Given the functionality, build quality and appealing design, people are willing to spend money on a Windows device.

Many people are willing to spend money on Macbooks regardless of being regarded as over-priced by some other people.

I think Surface has proved to us that, in addition to functionalities, cool design and build quality are equally important for users nowadays.

I agreed to you that Surface is relatively expensive. But I did not agree that Windows is the defining feature for people to purchase a Surface device. Those who bought Surface devices in general did not like Windows 8.1 so much. So the main reason of purchase is its build quality, design and form factor.

What I was trying to say is that people nowadays do not want to spend so much money on Windows devices - but Surface is one of the few exceptions.

I believe Surface will be even more successful with Windows 10.
