I'm looking for a program to make speakers not consume power when no audio is playing. Is it possible?

I'm not sure how feasible that is outside the power management inherent with the device drivers.

Do you have any anecdotal evidence that the speakers even consume much power when in an idle state? I assume these are built in and not externally attached...

The manufacturer said it consumes some power but not all.

I wouldn't expect a noticeable increase in battery life. You could toggle it off in Device Manager and then toggle it on when you need it. Or leave it off if you rely on a headset.
