Prediction - Where is tracking headed? Outside-in, Inside-Out or Laser?

I've been lucky enough to try all three tracking solutions currently on the market. The Vive lighthouses (infrared laser), WMR (optical, inside-out) and Rift (optical).

Daily, I use the Vive and believe it to have the best tracking solution, but lately I've been impressed with my HP WMR headset's inside out capabilities.

My view is that lighthouse, although technically superior, will be overtaken by inside out tracking.

I am a product manager for a software company so not a developer per se but I'm interested to hear from VR game devs on their predictions for the future of tracking in VR apps and games.

I feel tracking is heading to room/complex environments AND outdoor environments. We are already seeing VR experience's popping up around the country, for example, The Ghostbuster Experience in NYC....

It's a VR Arena, or VERY large space that groups can play around in. The equipment required, at least to do it REALLY right, is very expensive, so a park, arena, club etc would be the ideal solution. You can buy it in doses and thus not break the bank setting it up. Also the places wins out selling the "hours" after a large initial investment they can hopefully much more than make it back.

I think you're absolutely spot on that VR/AR will be something that can be used to create awesome immersive public attractions. It would be a whole lot cheaper to build Disneyland in VR that in real life!

For that we'll need some proper wireless solutions

I still think that with optics and Ai improving as they have been, inside out, controller-less tracking is the future.

I had a chance to try out a HoloLens as part of a company tour I did yesterday, it's quite amazing how well the tracking worked and how opaque the projected images were.

The hand gestures, gaze selection and pinch-clicking really seems ahead of their time for something announced in 2015.
