So my vzw phone(droid eris) is eligible for an upgrade in december but they told me today i could get a 30 day early upgrade at the end of this month. I spent last night exploring the latest of the android fleet, and had taken a fleeting look at the HTC Trophy last time i was in a vzw retail store, so decided to take a closer look at WP7 and i think it might be what i'm really after.

I've been really frustrated with my eris, its consistently slow, laggy, and at times just unresponsive. I've had to factory reset twice because the phone completely locked up when deleting large SMS conversations. I don't use a large number of 3rd party apps, and if it weren't for the email, nav, and occasional web browsing i would just go back to a feature phone. WP7 looks great for what I use my phone for, updates on social media, email, SMS, and a PHONE.

My only worry is that the horizon for WP7 on vzw looks bleak right now. I'm currently drooling over the lumia 800 and want it in my hands right now, but due to coverage in my area vzw is the only reliable option.

I think the Trophy would suit me just fine for now(and the price is attractive), but i'm afraid of buying another EOL phone and getting burned in the future(as i did with my eris).

Swoon me with your stories of seamless app transitions and smooth performance.

You should be able to pick up a used trophy for cheap. That could hold you over for a while and you will not be locked into a contract. Looks like used ones go for about $250 or so. That is just a little more than a contract priced newer phone.

EDIT: oh, thats the only phone on VZW I guess. Hey $29 is a good price on 2 year contract.

I wouldn't get locked into two years with a trophy. I think it's a great phone, but hopefully Verizon will release a newer WP7 within the next few months. If your current phone is so bad you can't wait I'd get one off ebay.

If you can afford paying $200 or so for a used/off contract phone and then buying a newer phone on contract when they become available, that's what I would do.

That said, my wife has a Trophy and it is fast and smooth and a pleasure to use. It's MUCH better than the Eris and I don't think it will get laggy within the two years you're on contract. The bif "if" is whether the Trophy and other first generation devices will be able to support the next big Apollo update, which is supposed to occur in the middle of next year. If it doesn't, I still think the Trophy will be a pleasurable device to use.

I use the Trophy and my only beef with it is the camera. I had hoped it would be good enough to replace using another camera, but it leaves some to be desired, at least for me.

Other than that, it's everything I would want in a smartphone. Looking at the rest of the WP7 line-up the only draws that new gen WP7 phones offer are perhaps a larger screen (Titan), forward-facing camera, or larger storage. But I don't have a need for forward-facing cameras, 16 gb is fine with me, and a larger screen is personal choice.

Other than those three options, the lovely thing about WP7 is that it is the same experience as other WP7s and doesn't need updated hardware to be effective.

I'll be fine sticking with my Trophy until my contract us up and maybe beyond. Regardless, Verizon starts allowing upgrade incentives earlier than 2 years (I think I got $50 off a phone after 1.5 years).

I would add, if you're concerned about getting burned on MS dumping WP7, I don't think that will happen. The metro UI is now going to be a part of everything they have going forward...WP7 and 8, Window 8, Xbox.

It is hard to justify getting locked into a 2 year contract for an already old phone.

Except what's "old" about it? What do 2nd gen phones offer over the Trophy? Maybe a FF camera, but not all do and that's not necessary for everyone. Perhaps a better camera, but again, the camera doesn't really make the Trophy old.

That's what I think is great about WP7, "old" hardware doesn't really matter because it runs smoothly no matter what hardware you get.
