I am thinking about getting my son this phone to replace his 520. I see that this screen is rated at 4.5 inches. But it looks as if the buttons on the bottom are on the screen VS always there like on my Icon. So I guess what I'm asking is how large is the viewable area? is the screen truly 1/2 an inch larger then the 520's?

And I would like to add the 635 is an awesome phone for someone to start with :)

Screen is 4.5". That includes the navigation bar. If you don't include navigation bar screen is 4.375"(content). "Usable" screen is 4.5" as the navigation bar is "usable".

Actual screen dimensions aside, the screen usability viewing comfort and overall effect between the 63X and 52X phones is significant. I've got both phones and the 635 screen is far easier to see and use. Technically you can (with DP) use three rows of "Metro" screen tiles, with the 52X, but in reality you really wouldn't want to. I don't know the pixel and dot count specs but the screen on the 635 feels like a great improvement.
