Should I just make the jump?

So the upgrade on my 928 isn't up until January but I'm eligible for early edge if I trade it in. It's definitely showing its age and has gotten pretty beat up. The screen is scratched, the camera flash stopped working, and it's started glitching out a lot lately and I have no idea if it's because of the dev preview or not (if it is, it might get fixed if cyan/denim ever sees the light of day)

So I'm thinking about just going ahead and taking them up on the early upgrade and have been back and forth about an Icon (assuming I can find one in store) and an M8. At this point I'm actually leaning more towards the M8 because after playing with one at the store I really love the design, and while the camera button and wireless charging will be missed I can't say they're dealbreakers. I even thought the camera wasn't nearly as bad as so many people have said. Plus the whole situation going on with the Icon right now makes me really hesitant to commit to it, not that Verizon couldn't just as easily screw the M8 over during the next round of updates.

So the big question is do I go ahead and upgrade or see if I can't squeeze whatever life I still can out of the 928. Verizon has been doing everything they can to **** me off (there have been like three occasions where I could have gotten an icon months ago but didn't because I thought the McLaren/1030 would be out by now) and I'd love to switch carriers but that would require me leaving my family plan since my dad gets a corporate discount. I'm graduating in 3 weeks but who knows what my employment situation will be for the next year so I guess I'm stuck with them for at least another contract cycle.

Ideally I'd rather hold out for a new flagship in the spring but if my 928 dies at any point between now and then, it's not like I'm gonna have a choice, and I'm not too optimistic that it'll make it that far.

At the least, I'd see if I could pick up at least a functional 928, 822 to bridge the gap if you decide to wait it out.

An Icon would be my personal preference because OIS and wireless charging, but the M8 sounds like the better option, although Verizon doesn't seem too keen on that as well.

Yes

As long as you can live without wireless charging and the camera button. I ended up putting the camera in my notification center so I can at least launch it fairly quickly. You will notice how much faster the camera apps load on the M8 compared to a Nokia, and it is also very nice when the picture takes almost instantly.

I came from six months with an icon running the DP. After using the M8 for one full day I knew the icon would be history and sold it the next day. Personally I don't find the whole Nokia line aesthetically pleasing at all. Far to boxy, flat and generic looking for my taste (and this coming from me, a Nokia fan boy since the past 15 years) However, that didn't keep me from loving the icon for what it could do, that is until I got the M8. I'm not in the "no real" camera button is a deal breaker club and wireless charging for me is not needed with the M8 since I can go till the nightly overnite charge with no issue. The icon always needed a boost and this was where the charging pad was nice. The cam on the M8 is fine for my needs so not an issue for me as it works great IMO. I do take very good care of my devices tho, but think the M8 will be good for the long haul, that's the plan anyway. As far as updates, the M8 needs none at this point. Whether or not the 10 update coming will be an improvement or not is in the eye of the beholder. I do think Microsoft wouldn't let the M8 get left out, but who knows when that would ever come to phones , no firm timeframe anyway.
I recommend the M8, best phone I've had in a long time, maybe ever. So smooth, great battery, fantastic solid build quality, running 8.1 "NOW".
Sounds to me, with your situation I'd be sticking to that family plan for economic reasons. Maybe when your unhooked from the family later you would want something else. Good luck with your decision.

I got the M8 from Verizon last Thursday and am very pleased with it. I miss the camera button and wireless charging, but their absence is not as bad as I had envisioned. I too have added the HTC Camera to my notifications area to speed access. Having the SD card expansion is a big plus. Also, the HTC TV Sense app is a great bonus that I never hear anyone talk about. Verizon just released the Softcard app that lets you pay wirelessly at retailers that support the contactless payments option. It works well and is another bonus that I wasn't expecting.

I agree with the above posts it is a great phone, I love my M8. Can't tell you what to do, but if you keep waiting for the next big thing you miss out on the one's that are here now.

Update: Went ahead and got one today and loving it so far. I actually love the speakers on this thing, it doesn't even sound like it's a phone. Thanks for the input everyone.
