Software updates for USA-based 620 owners

Say I was to purchase a lumia 620 to use on tmob or att here in the states. How will I get software updates? Would having a no-official-carrier-ties WP device be akin to owning a google nexus phone or an iPhone, in that it would get software updates as soon as they were released by Nokia-ms? Or is it more complicated than that?

You would get software updates straight from Nokia and Microsoft, bypassing any carrier you may be using.
