Sold my Galaxy S5 and bought a Lumia 520...Experienced a Windows Phone Hater

Hello all, I'm kind of new to the windows phone world and the lumia phones. I've had two in the past, a 520 and a 925. In May I got a Galaxy S5 with AT&T's "Next Program". The phone was pretty good. The screen was gorgeous, albeit a little too big. Funny thing is that I had a Galaxy Note 3 prior to the Galaxy S5. I sold the Note because it was too massive, and I actually thought the Galaxy was also too big. You can't have the best of both worlds I suppose (i.e., small form factor and a big screen).

One reason that I got rid of the Galaxy is that I thought the "special" features like the S-Health and HR monitor were pretty gimmicky and sometimes didn't even work. Don't get me wrong, the new galaxy was a great phone. I walked into the store one day, saw the gorgeous screen and "had to have it". But, after a while, the glitz wore off for me. Maybe, I'm nuts, but I bought and sold 6 phones since January of this year! I get bored maybe.

I know have a Lumia 520 as temp. phone. I updated it to 8.1 and I was really surprised they allowed this for such a cheap phone! I bought it for $49 at Radio Shack.

I think I'm going to miss having a decent quality camera and a flash. I also hate that the back, home, and search buttons do not light up...I forgot about how much I hated that until I bought it again. I'm probably going to be selling it again and buying a 925. I had a 920 before and was sad to see how dim the screen was in comparison to the screen on the 925.

One problem with the 925 was the battery. Perhaps it was the particular phone I had, but the battery was horrible. One minute it would read maybe 40% and the next it would be down to 15%. Anyone else have this issue?

Any other converts from Android to Windows? I must say, I was shocked by the clerk's response when I went to the At&T store to get the 520 activated. The way he looked at me and said, "Oh, you got a windows phone?!". It was like I walked in the store with the plague that would infect him. Why the hate?

why should you have that conversation in the first place? when I go to a carrier I just buy a sim card and get away, no reason to let them touch my phone, its painful to see those idiots trying to open the sim card tray scratching it with their nails and whatever pointy thing they can find

Carrier shop near my place................
I entered the shop, ( just wanted a handson on a few new wp handsets ).
All i could find was one WP phone between al those Droids and Apple tablets and phones.
The only wp phone in the shelf was a 920.
The guy laught and said, no thats the 1020.
I could not convince him that that was a 920 handset,
he grabed the box from behind and yes rule number one....the sarge is always right.
Final remark he made was that Nokia just imitating I-phone with the collors.........

Yea shure, salesman know your product.
Its just desinterest and ignorance.............

I used to be on androids custom world. Flashed roms more than enough. For me the transition from Android to WP has been breeze. Only thing I don't like is the battery life, but honestly an 2000Mah battery can't survive too long with the hardware they put today to smartphones. Tho I have heard that the 1520 has amazing battery life...

I moved to Windows Phone for a little while and then back to Android. I really like both operating systems.

The clerk probably got surprised that you moved from a high-end Galaxy S5 to a Lumia 520.

But I would recommend getting a Lumia 930 over the Lumia 925, if you don't mind the screen size.

I was with the wife at a B3$7 Buy a couple weeks ago. She really needed a new tablet. Especially, with our upcoming trip... (She was on my old Iconia A200.)

The wife likes Uncle Sammy. Oh well... It's what she likes. We spent quite a long time there looking at the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 that she eventually got. (Beautiful display, BTW... and paired with the matching keyboard/case... It's a stunning machine.)

Anyhow... We were there for probably a couple of hours talking to and cutting up with a Samsung Rep and a Google Rep.

Now, I try to stay pretty well informed on mobile tech. Belonging to and visiting the various Mobile Nations sites sure helps. I think both the Reps were fairly impressed that I know what I'm talking about. They tried some of that "Ewww Windows Phone" stuff, but didn't get very far with me. I showed them some capabilities on my phone and corrected some of their misunderstandings. By the end I think they both learned something (especially that they couldn't pull the wool over my eyes) and came to view Windows Phone in a bit more positive light. The coup de grace was when I showed the Samsung Rep the impressive power of Here City Lens. He just about messed his shorts, he was so blown away by what it does...

I think the vast majority of it for most people is habit. There is Apple and Android. They just remain blind to anything else. For people who make their paycheck in the tech arena, however, it is pretty inexcusable.

I have a Lumia 520 (an AT&T Go Phone) that I got for $39.00 to use as a media player. It's not a bad little device and plenty good for the money but you'll enjoy the WP 8.1 experience much more with a more powerful device. My daily driver is a Lumia 822 (certainly not a high end phone) which works great with 8.1 and I'm certain it will be improved whenever we get Cyan. I've (and probably a lot of us) have suffered the sneers and derision of ***** sales people and iPhone owners. It's not worth wasting any of your time on. Use whatever phone floats your boat.

Battery life has never been a problem for me on the 822. I hope you like whatever WP device you get next.

Well for me in the Carribbean, most people like Windows Phones, especially the Nokia Lumia 520. Sure Samsung and Apple pay alot for ads which has alot of people blindly saying, "Those phones are hot!"
But people don't really don't have a blind hate for Windows phones here, since most people are getting a smartphone for the first time.
But once in awhile I meet some people who say they don't want a Windows Phone because they"heard" it doesn't have apps.

I even had to correct my own sister. Since she just ignorantly went around telling people she did not like Windows Phone (even though she finds the UI to be most beautiful), because it did not have apps, untill I showed her that ALL the apps she uses (except Clash of Clans) were there.

Maybe the person meant.. "What? A 520?"...
seriously, why do you have to show them the phone? Just buy the $7 sim card and go home. You can activate it by phone in 2mins.

How about if US case is all about profit, not any hate against wp ? - we have some big chains who are selling profits (what ever give them the best profits are the most recommended ones) ... the most people do not understand that a such sales man is just making money, trying to reach his/her personal profit target, not recommending the best phones or the most suitable phone for a customer ...

I had a similar reaction when I went to a Verizon store just to look at a Lumia Icon (still have never seen one in person). They didn't have it on display, the salesman was like didn't even want one in the store and proceeded to tell me how unpopular Windows Phones are and that he had seen an Icon and it was really "boxy".
I've never understood the peer pressure with phones. iphones and androids are good if that's what you like, I really like my Lumia 920. But friends will stop calling you, and people will actually move away from you on the subway.

You went from one of the most high end phones available (S5) to the cheapest budget phone (520) in NA, you cant blame the cashier for questioning your decision...Im not an Android fan and i'd also question it lol. With that said, if you're constantly switching phones (i thought i was bad with changing 3 phones in the last 1 and half years) and likely used high end phones on all platforms, you'll probably grow to dislike your 520 very soon...i just find it hard to believe it could keep your interest. And we know why theres so much WP hate, its not the COOL thing to own and it is lacking specific high profile apps...so you cant blame reps with the mentality of "why would you chose something lacking features when there a bunch of feature rich phones not missing anything available?". The problem is when the rep tries to steer you away from your choice towards their bias opinion.

Just keep in mind they only care about their commission so they will stew you to higher profit margin devices (ios), or devices paying bonus incentives to sell them.

I've had a SG1, SG3, have now a contract Xperia Z2, but its the Lumia 930 I bought recently that really feels modern and unique and one of the slickest phone I've ever used. Even my partner who knows nothing outside iPhone wants a 930 after using mine

We don't support phones at work. At the most we help folks get their Active Sync working or their corporate email. But we do help as a nicety when someone walks in with a problem. In regard to the most problematic phones (break/fix, errors, hanging, apps not working, how-to's, etc), Android takes the cake. iPhone, WP, and BB are almost even.

Ignorance is bliss and there are a lot of happy campers. You can't help the fact that these reps have very little knowledge of Windows Phones. Knowledge is power and I encourage everyone to do their research before purchasing a device. Know all the pros and cons as well as asking others who have the devices you're interested in. This avoids buyers remorse and the hatred towards one specific operating system as well as mindless fanboys/fangirls.

Reminds me of the time, when my sister's friend was harping on about how crappy windows phone because her Lumia 800 didn't run ios apps and she was spouting the same crap as well. So i offered ?10 quid for her 800 since she felt that is what it was worth, which changed her mind pretty darn quick (next day I got a flurry of questions about WP and in the end she kept it, later I heard she upgraded to the 920 when it got released - had a chuckle when I heard that). I guess it helps being the nerd without glasses :winktongue: in my social circle (though I may need to get some contacts pretty soon lol)

Unfortunately, to this day Sales reps are still so ignorant and if people's noses grew with every lie they told (as in Pinocchio) their noses would be longer than the distance between the earth & moon (you would not believe the lies I have heard).
