"There's a lot of questions right now that Sony needs to answer."

An understatement.
It's not just developers being fired. And fired is the proper term; why sugarcoat it?
Long term execs (30+years) and their entire staffs are also being shown the door.

Something is going on at Playstation and it's not just the belt tightening ahead of the expected recession of the other game developers. There are reports from reputable sources that big changes are coming to Playstation from Japan.

We'll know soon enough but the hints are piling up that mistakes were made and Sony HQ isn't happy.

One report today said many/most(?) of the folks let go were in community relations, marketing, QA, art, music, HR, and other non-coding areas.
When Sony announced the Bungie purchase they said Bungie would remain independent and multiplatform. Judging by the layoffs, the independence may be gone.
