If I am not mistaken, the HTC Vive needs to be connected to a really powerful computer to experience VR. What is the truth that efforts are being made to develop VR devices that don't need to be connected or tethered to any device-even a mobile to get VR content?

Yep. Oculus should be releasing “Oculus Go” any time now. It is completely self-contained for $200.

It is true that the Oculus GO is coming out with an untethered headset, but the ones out there right now that are standalones use different brands of phone. That being said, it would be nice to have a standalone headset, but they are really up to par with the PC tethered ones at the moment.

There are two really promising standalone headsets coming out in 2018. The Oculus Santa Cruz and the HTC Vive Focus look like they'll be the best.
