I am getting mine tonight. I have heard here that a hard reset is needed before anything else. Can someone please put together a quick guide? I am switching from ATT Galaxy S6.

Thanks

I didn't perform a hard reset of my 950XL, I simply turned it on and restored a backup of my 1520 and things are fine.

However, this is one of "those" kinds of questions where everyone who responds will have a different opinion.

If I were you, I'd use the phone as it is and only perform a hard reset if there's a problem that requires one. I'm not really a fan of performing a hard reset just because the internet tells me to...

It's one of those never-to be-proven-wrong-or-right mysteries. :) I'm one of the guys who performs a hard reset before setting up a new device for the first time. I couldn't even tell you why. But doing it before setting up a device isn't time consuming at all. Unlike the same process after you've finished setting up your device.

One thing to do with the 950XL before a hard reset is to use the Lumia Offers app to get the offer promotion code for the free display dock. Hard reset removes the app!

Are you sure about that? Because it's a simple pre-installed app and a hard reset resets the device back to factory defaults, which is exactly the state the device comes in when you power it on for the first time.
Nevertheless, Lumia Offers can be downloaded from the Store like every other non-system app.

Put the sim in the card BEFORE you turn it on for the first time (the instructions do say this). My startup took over an hour in the "setting things up" mode, in the end I had to hard reset (with the gears screen) and it jumped straight to set up language screen.

if you're in the US and using ATT - like i am - you need to insert the sim card before turning on the device or charging it (which turns it on also) for the first time...
Then turn it on...
My expreience... some what convoluted but i ended up hard resetting a couple times to try and get ATT LTE working - i eventually had to give a Lumia 640 imei to online ATT chat and have the sim card in there (it can be used if you're careful with placement) and then let it see LTE and then i had to put i back in the 950XL.
Once there i did another hard reset and then did not use wifi during initial setup - kept it in express setup not custom...
Then i went straight to APN settings and updated those... but did not apply them.
Came back out to main cellular screen and then turned data off and then applied settings and then turned data on.
Almost gave up after all that as it still didnt show ATT LTE... but about 30 minutes later it finally saw LTE.

So i guess i could have saved myself one hard reset...

The offers app by the way - i downloaded it from the store as it wasnt pre-loaded.
It showed the dock offer - clicked through - got an email within 5 minutes - went to the store directly from the email, ordered it and its now showing as ordered and "coming soon" and "backordered"
This was all this weekend... so all fairly recent use and experience

I charged mine (UK user) before I put the sim in the just used my old 735 backup and have had no problems yet (got the phone 3 days ago and now running the insider build).
