Stuck On 8.1 On My Newest 640, Please Help

This is a continuation of my previous thread but this is a whole new problem. I just bought a 640 to give to someone and i am trying to put Windows 10 on it. However, i am stuck on Updates in settings and keep getting the error message seen above. My WiFi connection is fine, other phones can update, and this phone can browse the internet, download from store etc.. I have put the Insider app on the phone and successfully got it to set to Release Preview Ring but cant get past this error message. I have no sim in the phone. I have checked for updates for the past ~20 hours and about 50-100 times. One of those times i got the message "No updates available, your phone is up to date." Every other time i get this message with sometimes it being a different one.

I have tried:

• A soft reset
• A hard reset
• WDRT to reinstall 8.1 for OBE
• tried checking for updates with or without Insider preview installed
• removed the stock sim, and used the non-working stock sim
• let the device sit for a while on & off
• checked for updates 50-100 times

Please help, this should work without a sim on a wifi connection and i just cant get W10 installed no matter what i try...

That is just wierd.... try this set a phone as a WiFi hotspot and connect the 640 in question to the aforesaid hot spot, check for updates?

I have no idea if that would work as it wasn't on the list of things you've already tried hence the suggestion .

How do i set a phone as a WiFi hotspot? You mean through my data plan? I dont think ATT GoPhone plans allow for wifi hotspotting that is something extra you have to pay for usually.

Yeah i tried it in settings...i cant do it on any phone. It says its not available.

Ah... that sucks for you guys in the US.

Your only option I guess would be return it and get another unit, unless you want to go through the unbranding process via flashing the unlocked ROM.

Well the phone isnt even for me, i thought it would be nice to give this guy the phone with the latest OS. But im sure he wont care, or wont even know to care, that it has 8.1 and not 10. Maybe by the time 10 is officially rolled out the updates will start working anyway, and by then he will also have his own SIM plus be on a different wifi network so who knows...

Maybe i am doing him a favor? LOL some people would probably agree with that. That putting W10M is doing him a disservice. I have a coworker who has a 735 and is running 8.1 denim and i have not mentioned to him, not even once, that it is possible to get Windows 10 right now. Because he is frustrated with small and very few and far between bugs that are actually on 8.1, i couldnt imagine him dealing with Windows 10.

I suppose in regards to your friend, it depends if he has the patience but if he does not then it may be prudent not to put WM10 on it.

In regards to your co-worker that would be a bad idea if his tolerance for bugs is that low lol.

Wow. Feeling bad that for all of your good intentions, you're running into such a problem. Setting mine up on WiFi worked. Wish I could suggest something you haven't already tried. Sending good thoughts. It's still a really nice phone on 8.1 though .

I'm living in Asia and I have an unlocked AT&T 920 that would not update to W10 until I set the time and region to pacific and language to English like it was at first... I know you have a 640 which is totally different phone, but you seemed to have tried anything else.

I am going to try a WDRT reset again. I keep getting the same error message today. The latest one is 801881e1 "We are currently unable to check for updates" but the one that shows up 90% of the time is the "There was a temporary issue the with the server or your internet connection during the update 80072ee2"

I have sucessfully got my 929, 822, 950 XL, and my 640 to the latest .122 updates with the exception of the 950 XL which is running 10.0.14267.1004

No dice. Tried a WDRT reset. Put my WORKING SIM in it, logged in to my MSA using my working MSA, set up the phone and get the same error message over and over. Nothing.

Could i have a lemon device?

You guys won't believe this.

So i went to the local walmart to exchange the device. I figured what the hell why not connect to the walmart open wifi and try to download the update. Sure enough it finds the update and successfully starts downloading it. I couldn't believe it. I got to 7% and left the store. So apparently my 640 doesn't like my wifi at home. There is nothing wrong with my wifi, my other 640, 929, 822, 950 XL all connect to the wifi and download just fine, as well as every computer at home.And not only that, this particular 640 connects fine to the wifi at home, the internet works fine, the windows store works fine, but it keeps giving me that error message at home but not at the walmart store. So i just got home and connected to the wifi and it is continuing the update from 7% and is now at 8%.

Explain that one.

Well, whatever, it works now so i guess that's all that matters. What a pain in the a** I hate when things don't work for no particular reason at all. I still don't know what the problem is.
