Suggestions for a replacement music player app

Hi,
I do a lot of travel with work - Drive about 3,500 miles a month and listen to a huge amount of audio books in the car.
I am finding the default audio app lacking in a few features.
1. Showing items that have been played
2. remembering where I left off. - This is not strictly true it it does remember if I use the volume rocker however this only works if I don't play anything else or do anything like reset the phone. I also have a feeling there is something else that causes it to remove the ability to resume the current track but cant put my finger on the cause.

Does anyone have some good suggestions on a replacement that will accomplish this - it need to work with my cars bluetooth controls (my podcast app wont work with my steering wheel controls which is frustrating while driving but does at least show played items)
