Was talking to someone about the differences in the kickstand and hinges of the various Surface models. Curious if the hinges of any of the newer Surfaces can be replaced to be put on the older Surface RT and Pro? Searched and didn't see anything other than the replacement prices were outrageous. But if a third party manufacturer could just make the hinges to have the 2 kickstand locations or like the new Pro 3, that would be great!

In the close-up photos of the 3, the hinge mechanism looks a lot bigger/more substantial than the older designs. Given that (and no real reason for Microsoft to have focused on a hinge upgrade need), I doubt that there's any possibility of retrofitting a 3 hinge onto anything else.

It's probably possible, but I know little on the specifications of the hinge.
If physical constraints among other factors have remained the same, I don't see why not. Although its likely it will take significant retrofitting and modding that may result in a downgrade in sturdiness.

I don't know if the market for those hinges would be large enough. Hmm...
