So here's my scenario and my use:

I'm an Android phone user and I'm looking for a (mostly) portable laptop/tablet to be a bed/couch/travel companion for both work and play. I saw a couple of deals last week and picked up one of both HP models. I got the x360 with an i7 (6th gen), 8gb RAM, and 256gb SSD from the Microsoft Store and also tossed in the protection plan since I do plan on traveling with this for $1070+taxes. Then I saw a killer deal on the x2 from HP with an m7 (obviously 6th gen), 8gb RAM, and 512gb SSD and got 2 years protection from HP for $1218 after taxes. The x2 is also LTE-enabled, but I think it's only compatible with Verizon and I'm on AT&T. (I intended to return one of the two HP devices when purchasing, just didn't want to miss out on the deals). I just noticed that the S3 from Microsoft would run me today around $723+tax for the 4gb RAM, 128gb SSD model, with keyboard, pen, and protection plan. This would save me roughly $4-500 over the other two.

Now, obviously, both HP models are considerably more powerful, and do have more RAM and internal storage, however, I am wondering if they are overkill for my usage. While this would be for work, most of my work would consist of internet use, drafting documents, contacting people through social media, etc. And for play, it would be for streaming Netflix or Google Play movies/music, social media, fantasy sports, and internet browsing.

Based off of what I have said here and the prices I have paid for those two HP devices, would it be wise to save the coin and move to the S3? I would like to get a device that would last me at least a couple of years before moving on to the next best thing.

Thanks!

The surface 3 is a great device. I am typing on mine now. I think it will last well beyond the "next best thing" Samsung/apple marketing ploy. Stop wanting the latest and greatest, and you will remain happy with what your current devices can do. I know the surface pro 4 and surface book was coming out before I bought my surface 3s. But in the end, the surface 3 won because it was powerful enough for my use and the form factor was better than the others. I sold my HP touchsmart desktop, 2 laptops and 3 other tablets and got our two surface 3s and connected them to a 23" monitor using the dock. Its an awesome setup and works for people who are not gaming. That's the only place where the surface 3 is not a good machine.

Thanks for the response! I went ahead and ordered it, so I could make sure I locked in that price. I'm sure it would be perfect for what I need. Probably more so than the others, just because of the size and portability. My only real issue(s) with the S3 are the processor - just wondering how it will hold up over time; I've also read numerous issues with it - touchscreen responsiveness, battery drain, etc. But it really does seem like the machine for me and my needs.

I have no issues with either. and a processor does not "wear out" so if its fast now, its always fast. Its built like a tank, and works great. I am sitting in my home office right now, hooked up to my 23" monitor, and its awesome!

Well, I get that processors don't wear out, but apps and OSes do get more demanding making older processors seem slower over time. I'm just trying to do a little future proofing. But I really like what you get for the price on the S3 right now.

ahhhh, I get what your saying now. I don't think that's much of a problem anymore really, unless your gaming. I have an acer 4810T, and it runs everything in windows 10 no issue, graphics programs, photo editing, video editing. and that was sold in 2010. The processor race has SLOWED dramatically from the days of the jump from say a Pentium to a Pentium 2. That was a massive jump. But now, things on that front have slowed unless, again, you are gaming.

I think you will still be fine with the surface 3. We love our 2.
