First, sorry for this repost. Inadvertently posted it in the questions forum.

My Surface Pro 4 repeatedly has been freezing requiring a hard reboot since I got it on 11/4/2015. Almost, every time this has happened I?ve gone into Windows Update and found that there has been installed, or needs to be installed, a Definition Update for Windows Defender. Could this be the cause for the Surface Pro 4 to freeze so often? The update log for 11/9/2015 shows the installation of the following updates: (Definition 1.209.2242.0), (Definition 1.209.2229.0), (1.209.2218.0), (Definition 1.209.2210.0), (Definition 1.209.2204.0), and the System Hardware Update of 11/2/2015. I also noticed that the System Hardware Update of 11/2/2015 was installed on my Surface Pro 4 on the day I got it: 11/4/2015. Could these updates be the cause of the machine freezing so often or is it a driver issue? Is it unusual to have Windows Defender update its definitions so often on a single day? Should I return the machine or wait until the Windows 10 Fall Update is released, which I have read should be this Thursday? TIA.

Hello... I own a surface pro 4 the I5 8gb model since day one and windows defender has been updated numerous times, even twice a day. From my experience with the machine so far NO this is not normal at all ! I have had numerous updates in windows defender and everything went smoothly without any freezing after that whatsoever. So in my opinion something else is happening...

Check device manager that November 2 firmware update triggered a caution flag in device manager "Surface Embedded Controller Firmware" the tech at MS told me to delete the falg and reboot and try to reapply the 11/2 update.

Eventually I returned that one and got my current one in exchange..too many quirks with original one that mainly started with the 11/2 update.
