The Nokia X thingy!?

Now what exactly is the nokia X smartphone running? Does it run on the android OS?

Sorry but I don't get it. Does it have like say some version of android like Jellybean or Does it just emulate android apps?? What exactly is the OS?

It's AOSP. Actually any oem can go two ways, either go with Google Android or they can use AOSP and modify it according to their need.

Nokia did the same. They took AOSP and added Microsoft services onto it.

Nokia X runs a heavily skinned Android UI.( Heavily modificated).
However, there's no play store, only nokia store.

Hey Nokia X lineup runs a forked version of android. By fork I mean it does not have any google services (which includes play store , gmail , google maps , etc ). It's completely modified by Microsoft / Nokia with its own UI similar to what we have on windows phone 7.8/8/8.1 with Nokia Asia fast lane on top of it. You have Microsoft and Nokia services which includes one drive , Nokia mix radio , here maps. To install apps you have third party App Store like1 mobile App Store.
