Not sure how I feel about charging for the pen now. That was " always" the Surface Pro thing. I know the entry models didn't have the pen, but I'd expect the i7 to have it. I guess it's not a crazy expensive option.
The new surface pen might be worth it if the upgrade offers a significant improvement in experience over the now/soon-to-be older generation one...which I'll wait to see in person. That's also considering if the backward compatibility to the sp4 diminishes what it can do on the sp4.
It wasn't until after the SP4 launched that they made an option for the entry level with no pen. Pen was included on all models of the 1, 2, 3, and even the entry level of the 4th at launch.
I'm not going to debate the price and value, but the pen is now available in different colors to match the keyboard. They would need 5 times as many SKUs to offer all versions of the Surface Pro with and without all versions of the pen. That isn't practical.
