There is no microphone icon in cortana taskbar... why not?

I'm trying to get started with Cortana. I just got Windows 10.

Right click on taskbar, in context menu go to Cortana>Show search box, there you go, now you have microphone icon and Cortana in taskbar.
Note: if you have "Use small taskbar buttons" in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties enabled, Cortana stays as a circle, no search button is available.

I don't even have a cortana shown.

There used to be a Cortana Microphone on my taskbar, but; for some reason it disappeared; now it only shows the circle and I have tried to figure it out and cannot, the above reply is incorrect.

Click the Cortana icon in the taskbar and the microphone is in the lower right of the app
