Transfer text'ing history to new phone...

I have a phone with a broken screen (cracked but still works) and have a replacement phone. I want to transfer the text'ing history from the old phone to the new phone. How do I do this?

Idea's:
1. Update both phone's to Mango. Force a backup of the source phone after all the updates and then restore that backup to the new phone. I'm worried the hardware id's etc. will break this.
2. Is there some utility that will do this?

At the moment there is no way to move the texting history (as well as game saves etc) from phone to phone.

I am curious as to how your screen broke. What happened? In your pocket? Dropped it?

Has anyone actually tried backing up and restoring to a different phone? Or does this not transfer the text history anyway.

Regarding breaking it, it fell out of my pocket and landed face down a pebble. Really bad luck. A screen protector applied after the fact keeps it functional, however, it's very hard to read. The new one already has a screen protector on it.
