Turn off OneDrive more than pause and less inconveniently than unlink.

I'm analysing large data sets via Perl scripts and creating/loading/interrogating large Mysql databases and other files. OneDrive is a useful backup. Even when paused though, OneDrive uses a lot of resources as new files are created on linked drives. Unlink, however, is very inconvenient to undo via Link, requiring revalidation. Is there a way to stop OneDrive using resources that would not require unlink/link? Thanks.
