Unable to get past reset protection

So here's the situation. My primary phone died and while i wait for a replacement to be shipped to me I have a lumia 640 as a backup. It was running an old version of windows 10 insider preview. I went to update it and it failed with a face. I restored it using the windows phone recovery tool but due to the error I was unable to disable reset protection first. Now it wants me to remove the reset protection but somehow the phone isn't showing up in my devices. What can be done at this point or is the phone trash now?

So you went to Windows Phones and on the top right is an image of "your phone" and next to it a drop-down, go to find my phone and it isn't listed there? If not I would suggest calling Microsoft, there may be a way to find more info.

Can't you log into the protected phone with your account and unlock it from there?
