Update to 8.1

I have a Lumia 520 with SD card, to update my phone needs to remove the SD?

I didn't remove mine that have pictures and videos in it and never was erase. I downgraded to 8.0 to update to Cyan and then applied a hard reset and all my pictures and videos still there intact.

When updating, you don't have to remove your SD card.
