Verizon HTC 8X stuck on gears screen with latest update

My Verizon HTC 8X has been stuck on the gears screen for the past few hours. Is there anything I can do? Or is my phone basically dead? I have tried powering the phone off, but it just restarts and goes directly to the gears screen.

No luck. I'm not able to power down the phone. As soon as the phone powers down, it restarts, shows the HTC screen, and then goes directly to the gears screen.

On a Nokia, I hold down Vol DOwn + Power and wait for 3 vibrations, if i release on 1 vibration its a soft reset whereas 3 vibrations is hard reset (complete format).

HTC 8X hard reset

Timing is critical, if you miss 1 split second the try is gone and you have to start from the scratch.

Remember you'll loose all the data on a hard reset.

If it still does not work, opt for warranty clause.

The update finally finished after about 5 hours.

This same situation happened to me yesterday and it took over 5 hours for my phone to update. Was unusable during that time frame.
