Very blurry night pictures

I just got the 830 and so far I really like it. It takes great pictures except for night pics. I went outside to take a picture of the moon next to a star but was very disappointed in the results. The moon and star came out as a blurry blob. I used Lumia Classic Camera. I tried Auto and Manual with ISO 800 and 1/4. Anyone else notice this?

Same thing with a DSLR, more time needed to gather enough light for a picture means more shaking which results in blurriness.

Try with a tripod or something and do a long exposure shot for fun, you'll be surprised with the results

1/4 is still long
for hand held photography

Another thing to consider is that until you have the "final" denim update, the first picture you take each time you open the camera application is likely without functioning OIS due to a bug, which can definitely have a big effect on the blurriness of night photos. Try taking a "junk" photo, and then take a second one that you are actually trying to make work and OIS should kick in which should improve things for a given ISO/shutter speed combo relative to an OIS-less photo.

Thanks for the replies. I wondered if it was because of it not having the firmware update but I didn't think it would be that bad. Wow. And why hasn't it been released yet?????

This is very true. Night shots, especially those in real dark, need long exposures and higher sensitivity. This makes a tripod a compulsory tool for night shots. Hands shake, no matter how stable we think they are. My night shots improved greatly with a tripod. Shooting without one at night (unless you're in urban settings with lights etc.) doesn't give any proper result. But a long exposed shot of a starry sky with a tripod will give you extraordinary results.
