What exactly is "Glance"?

So I hear people saying that the Nokia Lumia 930 doesn't have glance, and some people think they don't need it, or forget about it after a little. What is it and what does it do? (sorry if there is already a thread about this)

Glance is the little digital clock that appears on your screen when the screen is off. It also displays notifications on the spots where your notifications are displayed at the lock screen if there are any. It adds an overall glance at the status of your phone.

It has a few options how it works,

It can work with the idk how its called sensor so it will turn on when you take it out of your pocket or wave with your hand above it,

Always on

Off.

I personally like the first option so when I take my phone out of my pocket I cab immediately see the time without tapping my screen or using the power button plus I can see any missed notifications.

The always on functionality is nice too but it drains too much battery for me.

Glance is a very low-power, low-visibility screen that displays the time and notifications whenever your phone is idle. You can actually set it various ways... always on, always on when charging, intermittent, and peek to further conserve battery usage... Essentially, it eliminates the need to bring the phone to life to check the time and to see if you have new mail, messages, tweets, etc.

Double-tap to wake was introduced simultaneously, but it is separate and part of the Navigation settings. With DTTW, Glance may not be as essential, since you can get the lock screen with a double-tap, but having the option of setting Glance to "always on" allows you to view the time without obviously doing so.

I disabled Glance on my 1020 for fear that it might cause OLED screen burn. I've seen shocking burn on demo phone OLED displays in the stores, which of course are on all the time at 100% brightness. But I like to be on the safe side....or does the clock move around a bit to use different pixels?

The clock moves around plus the screen gets refreshed to stop screen burn. I have had it for a weeks. No screen burn whatsoever on my Lumia 1520

Thank you! In other words, Nokia knows how to design phones, which I ought have realised they might.

The 1520 has an LCD display so it won't suffer from burn-in like an AMOLED display.

That seems pretty cool, but I can live without it. It would be nice to just check my phone while its locked. You guys said it shows notifications? What if somebody takes my phone and just looks at it? Haha, but is double tap yo wake still there without glance? Cuz I really want that.

Yup, you can have double tap to wake without glance. Glance will only show the icon counters from the lock screen (unless you set it to show the detailed text from the lock screen), so there wouldn't be much to peek at

I used it a lot on my 920 and at first on my 1020. After I put 8.1 on my 1020 my battery was TERRIBLE so I turned off everything I could think of. Now my battery has evened out I never turned glance back on, so I guess for me it's not a deal breaker though it is frustrating to see new phones come out lacking features older ones had even with good reason.

The AMOLED display that is used does not have display memory.

Or if you use a flip case as I do, when you lift the flap off the screen (like a fridge light, difficult to demonstrate).
