What happens if your phone gets bricked by an update?

Basically I just want to ask if your phone gets bricked by an update, will Microsoft or Nokia replace it and take blame for it? I have an unlocked phone from eBay and the warranty the seller offered recently expired, so I'm just curious to know what Microsoft will do if this ever happens.
