I've got a Surface 3. In the last day or so I've seen the "Get Windows 10" app in my System Tray. I've clicked on it and its talks about reserving my copy of Windows 10. I thought it was an automatic download. What is this app about?

Informs Microsoft that you want Windows 10 and thus "reserves" a copy for you on release, which you must then install within a year to get it for free. You technically don't need to use that app, but its there to help make it easier to know when its released and ready to use.

I believe you are signing up to predownload the upgrade before the launch date. You will have access anyway.

It's not automatic, the user will have to initiate the upgrade regardless.

So then there's nothing related at all to entering one's email address? What's the point?

The point is, if you reserve and enter your email address, Windows 10 will get downloaded automatically between now and 29th July, and at that date MS will inform you to click the install button. If you don't reserve, you will have to download Windows 10 sometime AFTER 29th July, it can be days or even months.
