What's the Pin thing do in settings?

In Settings, after you pick a category, just to the left of the search bar there is a pin thing that you can toggle. I've also seen this many times before in various programs. Can anyone tell me what it actually does. I've never noticed it do anything whenever I've clicked it. First I thought it would lock that particular window on top so if you sellected a different window you could still use it. But clearly it's not that.

It pins whatever app/setting you're using to the Start Screen.
